In 2008, TrueWomb® Inventor and Founder Clifford A. Hardesty discovered firsthand the frustration of trying to soothe and coax his newborn grandson back to sleep after the baby repeatedly kicked out of his swaddle throughout the night, awakening the entire household and impacting the duration and quality of everyone’s sleep. It was within the baby’s first few nights home from the hospital that Clifford began seeking a better night’s sleep for his grandson, and himself!
Clifford soon found himself holding his grandson in his arms while at the same time using one hand to gently ease the baby’s legs back into the fetal position. The key was to give him the controlled ability to kick and stretch his legs during sleep and return the legs back to the fetal position immediately after kicking and stretching them. Clifford realized that this simple, yet core, concept was the key ingredient missing from existing receiving blankets, sleep sacs, Velcro blankets and other sub-standard and confining swaddles that were being offered at the time. In fact, after searching store after store, he was stunned to realize that no swaddle currently existed that could provide the crucial “4th trimester” experience necessary for baby to achieve quality sleep. So, Clifford set out to fix the “missing link” in swaddling care with the goal of creating a new type of swaddle specifically designed to give baby the closest feeling possible of being back in the womb after birth…a sleep system designed to feel like the womb itself!
Taking into account the quick pace at which newborns and infants develop, Clifford also determined that a two-stage sleep system would be necessary in order to perfect what the market was currently offering in “swaddling care” and deliver what he felt Mother Nature intended.
Two years of research, patenting process, prototyping and testing eventually resulted in the release of the first two-stage sleep system in October 2010 – the TrueWomb® Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System and Arms-Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System.
