FAQs

Q – Why should I swaddle my baby?
A – Medical research shows that swaddling in the first several months can help ease your baby’s transition from the womb to the world. We’re not here to tell you that every baby must be swaddled in order to be happy, sleep well or develop normally… every baby is different! But imagine the shock of leaving the cozy darkness of the womb and entering the bright lights, noises, smells and temperature changes of the outside world. There’s no denying that many babies don’t handle this transition well. In fact, most experts believe it’s the major cause of fussiness, poor feeding, lack of sleep and other difficulties like colic. It’s for those babies and parents that we believe swaddling is a great choice… and it’s why we tried to design the very best swaddle ever! Learn more.

Q – What is the “4th Trimester” and what does it have to do with swaddling care?
A – The 4th Trimester has to do with the generally accepted concept that unlike many other species, human babies are especially immature at birth and need extra support, particularly in the first 3 months of life (or 4th Trimester).

Humans are born about three months before our systems are fully developed. If we were not essentially evicted from the womb, natural childbirth would be virtually impossible because of the average size of the human fetus’ head. It’s a quirk of nature that means human newborns need extra nurturing and attention during the first few months of life. A significant way to provide this support is swaddling, especially during those times when you’re not available to hold and nurture your baby. Our research shows that the best kind of swaddling care for the 4th Trimester and beyond mimics the structure and feel of the mother’s womb.

Q – What is the TrueWomb® advantage over other swaddles or sleep systems?
A – TrueWomb® addresses baby’s transition from womb to world in a way never seen or done before:
• Realistically recreates the womb by allowing movement of baby’s arms and legs rather than binding them or simply not addressing them
• SwaddleTech™ Pouch replicates the feel of the uterine wall, keeping baby’s legs in womblike fetal position with just enough resistance to stretch and kick while active and returning legs to naturally desired fetal position while at rest
• SecureSleeve™, escape-proof design secures arms across the body comfortably while still allowing for natural movement of the arms and hands, preventing disturbances such as the startle reflex and scratching of the face
• ComfortWrap™ belt adjusts for growth and provides a gentle yet snug fit. Soft pressure on the abdomen reduces colic symptoms and provides the comfort of tummy sleeping with safety of sleeping on the back
• Greatly reduces or eliminates gastrointestinal colic
• Improves quality of sleep by reducing the “startle reflex”
• Enhances feeding as a result of improved quality and duration of sleep
• Lightweight, breathable four-way stretch cotton provides comfort and prevents overheating
• Available in four sizes –X-Small (XS) thru Large (L)
Q – Why does the TrueWomb® Sleep System cost more than other swaddling care products?
A – Could you actually put a price tag on the possibility of you and your baby repeatedly getting a good night’s sleep? Most new parents tell us that a good night’s sleep is PRICELESS. Just imagine the prospect of the whole household being able to sleep more restfully night after night. A $39.99 investment in TrueWomb® gives you the guarantee that baby will sleep better and longer – or you get your money back.
While TrueWomb® is noticeably more expensive than other products, it truly is the most advanced swaddling care product on the market today, period. And we believe the old adage, “You get what you pay for.” That is why we have selected the best materials and used the most cutting-edge technology in order to engineer a truly “game changing” product for parents and caregivers. There is simply no other swaddling care product on the market today designed to meet baby’s 4th Trimester needs while helping baby sleep safely, more comfortably, with longer stretches of Quality Sleep and with the added benefit of greatly reducing or eliminating colic.
Q – Why are the legs (the missing link) and core so important to the TrueWomb® concept?
A – The legs and abdominal core are the biggest muscle groups and the hardest for newborns and infants to keep tucked up while lying on their backs. To reduce SIDS risks, we expect newborns to sleep flat on their backs even though their central nervous systems aren’t yet fully wired, their digestive systems aren’t completely developed and their abdominal muscles, hips and legs can’t sustain a full fetal tuck in this position. The ComfortWrap™ belt applies gentle, consistent pressure to your baby’s abdomen, providing extra security, comfort and addressing colic issues. Meanwhile, the SwaddleTech™ pouch simulates what they felt in the womb. This design is simply following the design Mother Nature created, which allows for natural womblike movements. TrueWomb®’s design also aids in greatly reducing or eliminating colic by keeping gentle pressure on the abdomen while allowing the legs to push out, which aids in the passing of gas and bowel movements in the early stages of life.
Q – How do I put the TrueWomb on my baby?
A – TrueWomb® is easy to use once you’ve done it a couple of times, but it only works its magic if you put it on properly! The keys to the entire system are: 1) making sure you have the right size, 2) making sure you start with the legs in the fetal position inside the SwaddleTech™ pouch and 3) ensuring you have attached the ComfortWrap™ belt snugly and at the proper position across the torso. There are instructions on the back of the package and on a label printed on the inside arm of the swaddle itself. If those are not available or detailed enough, please watch this quick instructional video for the Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System ™ or the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of The TrueWomb® Sleep System™ or read our step by-step instructions for both swaddles. You’re also welcome to call or e-mail us directly.
Q – How does TrueWomb® help alleviate colic symptoms?
A – TrueWomb® gives baby the comfort of tummy sleeping with the safety of sleeping on their back. Gastro-intestinal colic symptoms stem from a newborn’s inability to easily pass gas and bowel movements and other potential factors such as diet. The patent-pending structure and fabric combination of the SwaddleTech™ pouch provides active resistance that allows newborns and infants to kick and stretch the legs, hips and abdominal muscles so they can pass gas and bowel movements much easier and without disrupting sleep. Let’s put it this way… when you have severe gas pains and bowel distress would you want to be forced to lay flat on your back with your legs down? Or would you prefer to be on your belly with your legs tucked underneath you? This is what your gassy baby is faced with when they must sleep on their backs (to reduce SIDS risks) but have no leg support to allow them to be in the fetal position! The TrueWomb® sleep system gives baby the best of both worlds… legs are supported when they are at rest, yet baby has the ability to kick and stretch with some active resistance to help push out the gas and bowel movements. How sweet it is!
Q – What is the purpose of the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System and why does it control the legs but not the arms?
A – The legs and core, as they relax and drop as sleep sets in, are primary triggers of the startle reflex and therefore the most important to secure. But the arms are also a key factor, especially in the early stages. As babies grow, they develop better control of their arms while sleeping and are less likely to scratch their face and eyes. We developed the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System as a second-stage product to help babies ease into the next phase of development and start to wean off full swaddling. This design has the same SwaddleTech™ pouch for the legs, but features a short-sleeve top that allows the arms the freedom to move and explore. The Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System is great to introduce at naptime as you begin to make the transition. After the first two months or so, some parents prefer to use this model during the day and continue to use the Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System at night so their baby (and the rest of the family) gets a full night’s rest. On rare occasions, newborn babies may totally refuse to have their arms tucked inside a swaddle, so we also make this version in a newborn size for babies who may refuse to have the arms wrapped but want the comfortable fetal position for the legs. However, we encourage parents to try the Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System several days in a row (and several times a day) with their newborns before giving up. Every baby is different, but this is typically the most effective method for helping newborns feel safe and secure. It may just take a bit of getting used to but once they recognize that they sleep better in it, they will welcome it!
Q – What material is the TrueWomb® swaddle made of and will it hold up to multiple washes?
A – TrueWomb® is made of specially selected stretch cotton (cotton / spandex blend). We use what is called “long staple” cotton which is basically the same structure as Pima cotton. It makes for a wonderfully soft, yet durable, fabric that will hold up much better to multiple washings than other products made of lighter, less expensive cotton fabric. But we don’t use this high quality fabric just for the heck of it… our research has determined it’s important for the specific performance characteristics necessary for the product to work its magic. We do recommend that you have at least two TrueWomb® swaddles in your baby’s size so that you always have one available for sleep time!
Q – Will swaddling make my baby overheat?
A – Overheating is one of the biggest SIDS risks and should be avoided at all times. TrueWomb® uses a lightweight, breathable four-way stretch cotton fabric to reduce the risk of overheating. We recommend using TrueWomb® in normal indoor temperatures between 69 and 73 degrees. There are swaddle products and blankets on the market made of very heavy fabrics like fleece that should give parents and caregivers cause for concern. Wrapping your baby in several layers, or a single heavy blanket, can also be very dangerous when it comes to SIDS risks. A baby may appear to sleep well for long periods in a heavy blanket or fleece wrap but this is probably because they are lethargic and not necessarily getting QS (quality sleep).
Here a few simple ways to avoid this:
• Wrap baby in the TrueWomb® sleep system and a thin bodysuit only.
• Be sure the room is not too warm. The temperature should be comfortable for a lightly dressed adult. Most babies can sleep well at about 69 to 73 degrees. They generate an amazing amount of body heat so don’t be afraid to err on the cooler side.
• Due to suffocation and overheating hazards, do not use other blankets or swaddles with, or on top of, the TrueWomb® sleep system. This is a serious health risk and is strongly supported by the medical profession and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
Q – Is it true that improper swaddling can cause hip dysplasia?
A – According to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, “Improper swaddling can lead to hip dysplasia. For swaddling to be both effective and safe, the baby should be wrapped so that the legs are able to bend up and out at the hips. This position allows for natural and proper development of the hip joints. The baby’s legs should not be tightly wrapped straight down and pressed together. Swaddling infants with the hips and knees in an extended position may increase the risk of hip dysplasia and dislocation.”
TrueWomb® supports these findings and it’s why we include the dynamic stretch properties of our patent-pending SwaddleTech™ Pouch into our design so that baby’s legs can bend up and out at the hips, and stretch and kick freely, yet return to the bent-knee fetal position while at rest – helping to safely support natural growth and development. For more information about hip dysplasia and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute’s recommendations on safe and effective swaddling, visit http://www.hipdysplasia.org/Infant-and-Child-Hip-Dysplasia/Hip-Healthy-Swaddling/Default.aspx .
Q – Can swaddling make it hard for my baby to breathe?
A – Studies have shown that this is not a big concern with most modern swaddles as long as the wrap is not too tight and is made from a stretchable fabric that doesn’t restrict chest movements. The TrueWomb® sleep system, and any other swaddle, works best when your baby is wrapped snugly but comfortably.
Q – What is the startle reflex or “Moro Reflex”?
A – The startle reflex is when infants startle or jump for no obvious reason. You’ve probably experienced this yourself when “falling” asleep. There are several different theories but one suggests that without the support of the fluid in the womb, baby often experiences a falling sensation and awakens with a start. This reflex can be almost entirely controlled by a good swaddle. TrueWomb®’s SecureSleeve™ design feature prevents the startle reflex by securing baby’s arms across the body comfortably while still allowing for natural movement of the arms and hands.
Q – My baby wiggles, kicks and grabs while eating. Does swaddling help this?
A – Absolutely. With TrueWomb®, baby is wrapped securely—the perfect position for feeding. But we also recommend that you sometimes feed baby without the swaddle so they can benefit from additional bonding time. Note: When feeding your baby without TrueWomb®, simply hold them as if they are wrapped in the sleep system, by holding their legs in the fetal position with one hand and supporting them with the opposite arm while feeding. Remember, while it may be tempting to rely heavily On TrueWomb® as a “virtual babysitter” because it is so effective, it is important to take your baby out of the sleep system from time to time for diaper changes, burping, bathing, tummy time and other fun breaks during the day!
(A NOTE ABOUT FEEDING – Please follow your pediatrician or lactation consultant’s specific advice on feeding schedules for your baby! Swaddling should not prevent a newborn infant from sleeping through their designated feeding times, even though baby may appear to want to sleep through feedings. It is intended to help improve the quality of sleep they get. For those who chose to breastfeed, the ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association) has some excellent resources. Find a Lactation Consultant: www.ILCA.org.
Q – My baby likes to suck his thumb. Can I still swaddle with his arms free?
A – Yes, and that’s one reason TrueWomb also makes the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System . Although we recommend that you accustom your newborn to the sensation of having both arms inside the swaddle to avoid scratching and the startle reflex, our second-stage model helps keep the legs in the fetal position but leaves the arms and hands free to reach explore. Remember, the legs are the missing link to swaddling care and have more to do with causing the startle reflex than the arms do for most babies, so this version may be great for your thumb-sucking baby!
Q – When should I stop swaddling my baby?
A – Whenever your baby can sleep through the night without it! Every baby is different, but anywhere from three to nine months is not unusual. Our best advice is to use the Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System for the first few months and then start incorporating the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 TrueWomb® Sleep System as much as possible so your baby gets used to the sensation of having their arms free. However, we size the product by the baby’s length and weight, not by age, because a tailored fit is vital to TrueWomb®’s performance. We make four sizes of the Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System to accommodate preemies through most six-to-nine-month-olds and the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System comes in three sizes (S, M and L) See our sizing charts.
Q – How do I wash my TrueWomb® swaddle?
A – Fasten all hook and loop Velcro closures before washing. Machine wash in warm water and tumble dry low setting. No bleach. Wash with like colors.
Q – Help, my baby’s arms got out! What am I doing wrong?
A – Just like in the womb, babies want and need movement! A baby who is tightly bound will naturally struggle to break free. TrueWomb®s SecureSleeve™ feature prevents the arms from escaping but still allows for natural movement of baby’s arms and hands. A baby wrapped correctly into the proper size TrueWomb® will not only sleep longer and more comfortably, they will not even want to “escape!”
Q – I followed the sizing chart but it seems like it’s too small for my baby?
A – When selecting a TrueWomb® Sleep System product, it is important to remember that accurate sizing is crucial, with baby’s length being the most important factor! When sized properly, babies will fit snugly and comfortably into their TrueWomb® Sleep System. If not, contact us and we will immediately arrange to send you another size.
Q – Can I use the Arms Free Swaddle ™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System from birth?
A – Yes. The swaddle is available in a newborn size since we recognize that from birth some babies may prefer to keep their legs tucked into the comfortable fetal position without having their arms wrapped.
Q – I want to swaddle my baby but still allow him to have a wide range of movement with his arms, should I only use the Arms Free Swaddle™: Stage 2 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System?
A – No. The Sleeping Swaddle™: Stage 1 of the TrueWomb® Sleep System is specifically designed to allow baby’s arms to rest comfortably across the body while still allowing for rooting, thumb sucking and other natural range of movement of the arms and hands.
Q – What is the size range of a baby that can fit inside the TrueWomb® Sleep System?
A – Given that we have designed a two-stage sleep system, TrueWomb® is available in a range of sizes in order to accommodate preemies and babies up to approximately 9 months old. See our sizing charts.
